On October 17, the South Carolina Department of Education (SCDE) released school, district, and state report cards reflective of the 2021-2022 school year. For the second time, Gray Collegiate Academy (Gray) has received an Excellent rating from the SCDE. This is the highest possible rating the school could have achieved.

The descriptive overall ratings of Excellent, Good, Average, Below Average, and Unsatisfactory as well as individual report card indicators are assigned to schools annually. The 2022 report card includes results from state assessments administered in the Fall of 2021 and Spring of 2022. For Gray Collegiate Academy specifically, the 2022 report card incorporates state assessment results including the End-of-Course Examination Program (EOCEP) given at the high school level, and the Ready to Work (R2W) career readiness assessment administered to 11th grade students.

Along with receiving the Excellent rating, the school also continued its tradition of an especially high on-time graduation rate. Gray’s graduation rate for 2022 was 99.3%. Gray’s overall report card rating and on-time graduation rate far exceeds the local school district, making Gray a high-quality option for school choice in the Midlands.

“I’m excited and honored that Gray Collegiate Academy is again honored for the second time in its history as an “Excellent” High School,” said Dr. Brian Newsome, Principal. “I want to thank the school board and especially the board’s chair, Teresa Brazell for her consistent support and encouragement. Through COVID and difficult learning obstacles, we remained steadfast without excuse to maintain a culture that is inviting, positive, and focused on improving student achievement. This rating today is a testament to achievement of these expectations and we look forward to a bright future. As we always say, it’s a great day at Gray, and today is truly great.”

“The leadership, faculty, and students at Gray Collegiate Academy continue to demonstrate excellence in all they do,” said Cameron Runyan, Superintendent at the Charter Institute at Erskine. “We are proud of their hard work and look forward to celebrating with them this year as Gray continues to grow.”

Gray Collegiate Academy is a tuition-free public charter school located in West Columbia, South Carolina known for elite athletics and outstanding academics. Gray serves students with a college preparatory program in grades 7-9 and dual enrollment for grades 10-12. Students graduate from Gray Collegiate Academy with up to 56 hours of college credit and numerous college scholarship opportunities.

I have been looking into structured literacy options for my child, as the school curriculum doesn't always provide enough individual attention. I noticed that many online platforms are quite disorganized, but this one seems to follow a research-based curriculum aligned with US standards. They cover phonics, fluency, and comprehension for grades K–9. From what I’ve gathered, the lessons are 1:1 with certified tutors, which is a more rational approach than group sessions. For those who prefer to verify the technical details of their curriculum or check the specific lesson structures, you can find more information here: https://brighterly.com/reading-program/. The pricing starts at $17.7 per lesson, which is relatively standard for the current market. I haven't committed to a long-term plan yet,…
